In the idyllic town of Kemmel, Belgium, where rolling hills meet historic architecture, a remarkable event unfolded—the inaugural Vintage VW Meeting in Flanders Fields. On June 1st and 2nd, 2024, classic Volkswagen enthusiasts from across Europe gathered at the picturesque De Warande castle to celebrate their shared passion for vintage cars. Against the backdrop of ancient stone walls and lush greenery, the air buzzed with vintage pre-’57 Volkswagens, and the symphony of engines echoed through time. I picked up my friend Eric van Dooren in the 1951 Beetle- at 05.00am in the morning- to make an early start to the show.
As the sun bathed the Kemmelberg in golden light, the scene resembled a vivid postcard from the past. A total of 235 original and period-correct Volkswagens, all built before August 1968, stood proudly on display. Beetles, T1 Buses, and Ghias—each with its unique story but all stock—lined up. Enthusiasts got together even though the weather on Friday and Saturday wasn’t too good. With rain the ground was wet and muddy. Still many participants where present and we could only imagine this setup with sunshine. We had a great day still looking at the Split Window, Oval Window and KdF Beetles, many Karmann Ghia’s, Hebmüllers, Schwimmwagen and even some Coachbuild cars. We also strolled over the swapmeet area to see if we could score some parts.
Sunday, the sun came out and already this was such a different and good atmosphere! Visitors strolled through the rows of rare cars,
Saturday afternoon the organization set out a scenic tour through the region. This was a very nice drive, and it’s always great to see other air-cooled VWs driving round as well. The vintage Volkswagens embarked on individual journeys along winding roads that crisscrossed the region. Participants reveled in the joy of driving their beloved classics through Kemmelberg, Heuvelland, and Ypres. Each turn revealed quaint villages, and glimpses of WWII history.
At a local pub in Heuvelland, enthusiasts gathered for refreshments, talked dubs and just enjoyed a good weekend among fellow minded VW friends.
Sunday morning dawned with anticipation—the awards ceremony. Trophies gleamed in the sunlight, waiting to honor the most beautiful Volkswagens. Judges scrutinized every detail—the flawless paint, the authenticity of accessories, and the spirit of preservation. But beyond the polished exteriors, they sought the stories behind each car—the memories etched into their metal frames.
As names were called and trophies awarded, applause filled the air. The proud owners stepped forward, their faces reflecting pride and camaraderie. It wasn’t just about winning; it was about sharing a piece of history. The oldest Split Window Beetle, still wearing its original paint, stood alongside the fully restored Oval Beetle, and so on…
The Vintage VW Meeting in Flanders Fields was a great first edition and will be back in another four years to come. Against the medieval castle, surrounded by fellow enthusiasts, we had a beautiful weekend. For many, as like us, it wa still a long drive back home, so at around 2pm it was time to get back in our ’51 Crotsch Cooler Split Window Beetle again and make the 360km journey back home again. Thanks to the organization for a splendid weekend.
