‘Beetle Sphere’ we checked out at the Las Vegas Resort World hotel. This artwork we’ve seen online, but was great to see in real life!
About: Ichwan Noor (1963) is famous with sculptures and large-scale works he created by reinterpreting original parts of 1953 VW Beetle. He participated in variety of international exhibitions and received the Best Artwork Award in Indonesia Art Motoring: Motion and Reflection organized at the National Gallery of Jakarta, 2011.
Noor teaches at the Yogyakarta University Faculty of Fine Arts. Noor’s pieces are created by first making a polyurethane mold of a genuine Beetle, distorting it into a cube or sphere, making a second inner and outer mold, then casting the finished shape in aluminum. The resulting sculpture is then painted and affixed with acrylic windows and genuine trim pieces including lights, wheels and tyres.
