Movie: Curitiba Volksfest 2024, Brazil

Together with Bob from BBT Belgium we visited the ‘Curitiba Volksfest 2024’ in Brazil. What an amazing VW scene they have, and the show weekend was beyond my expectations! Curitiba Volksfest 2024: A Feast for Volkswagen Enthusiasts

The Curitiba Volksfest is an annual event taking place in Curitiba, Brazil, aimed specifically at classic Volkswagen car enthusiasts. The fifth edition of the festival took place on 4 and 5 May 2024 at the Bosque São Cristóvão. We went there to check it out on invitation by BBT, we received a very warm welcome by the organizers as well as the shows visitors and air-cooled VW people! Amazing!

Here are some highlights of the event:

Exhibition of Antique Cars: The festival offered an extensive exhibition of old cars, with a special section dedicated to national – Brazilian – models! The Karmann Ghia TC and the TL, the VW Brasilia, the sportswear VW SP2, there where PUMA’s, the Kombi buses and many other special VW Beetle editions they only had in Brasilia.

Gastronomy and Music: The festival offered not only cars, but also good food and live music. On Saturday, the official Volksfest Maibock beer was launched, a German lager traditionally produced only in May. Visitors could enjoy a variety of dishes, including grilled ribs, burgers, pizza and sweet treats such as açaí and churros. Several beers were also available, including lager, IPA and red ale.

Live Performances: On both days, there were live performances by several bands on the main stage. While on the other side of the area the music was provided by Kombination.

The Curitiba Volksfest 2024 was a great event for Volkswagen enthusiasts, with a mix of history, cars, good food and live music.

The history of classic air-cooled Volkswagen models in Brazil is interesting and has some unique aspects.

Let’s take a look at a couple notable models:

Volkswagen Karmann Ghia TC: The Karmann Ghia TC (Touring Coupé) was a Brazilian variant of the iconic Karmann Ghia. Unlike the European versions, the TC was only produced in South America and was not intended for export.
The TC was built between 1972 and 1975. The design came from Italian design house Ghia, with Giorgetto Giugiaro as the man behind the lines of this three-door fastback.
Despite its unique design and air-cooled boxer engine, sales were not particularly successful. Only 18,119 units were produced before Volkswagen do Brasilia pulled the plug.

Volkswagen Brasilia: The Volkswagen Brasilia was another air-cooled model produced in Brazil. It had a 1600cc engine and was built between 1975 and 1982.
The Brasilia was also assembled in Mexico and Nigeria based on CKD kits. Many examples can still be found in those countries.

VW Fusca: Although the VW Fusca (also known as the Brazilian Beetle) was not exclusive to Brazil, it was produced there. It was an air-cooled version of the familiar Volkswagen Beetle.
Production began in 1963 and continued until the 1980s. The Brazilian Fusca has a specific charm and is still appreciated by classic car enthusiasts3.
In short, Brazil’s air-cooled Volkswagen models have their own story and are loved by collectors and car enthusiasts around the world.
